CSCEC starts work on crucial Congo road

China’s state-owned contractor CSCEC has started work on a 600-km road linking the Republic of the Congo’s port of Pointe-Noire to the capital, Brazzaville.

The US$500-million project is seen key to improving basic infrastructure in this oil-exporting country, where a lack of roads and a dysfunctional railway system have contributed to the high cost of food and imported goods.

“As you can see, the work on the first 20 km has started,” Jean Jacques Bouya, managing director of the state firm managing the country's large infrastructure projects, told Reuters news agency at the construction site.

CSCEC will have to negotiate thick forests and steep mountains for the first 160 km of the project.

“This road will accelerate the development of our country by turning it into a transit route for countries in the sub-region as many goods will pass through Pointe-Noire's deep water port en route to various destinations,” Bouya said.
